History

The place got the name “KALLAHALLI” because on the day of MAAGHA SHUDDHA POORNIMA , Lord Sri Srinivasa’s BRAHMA RATHOTHSAVA is held in very grand manner. Thousands of devotees come to seek the blessing of the Lord.

The interesting thing is that when the rathothsavam is held the devotees call out the Lord as GOVINDA, GOVINDA which is believed was heard to Lord Venkateshwara in Tirumala , after the Lord hearing the devotees leave Tirumala for that Brahma Muhurtaa like a thief settles in the idol of Kallahalli Srinivasa. This way of coming of the Lord like thief to Kallahalli made it known as “CHORA PURI” and this CHORAPURI in kannada became “KALLAHALLI”.

One more important thing to note is that at the time of BRAHMA RATHOTHSAVA there will be a “MAHA MANGALARATHI” for the Lord before moving the chariot. At that pios time we can see the Kite taking a parikrama of the chariot once, even to this date.

THE PUROHITS AND THEIR HIERs

When the idol of the Lord was brought from the river , the next thing was to appoint a purohit to do the day to day services of the Lord. Then with the inspiration of the Lord and with his blessings he said to bring the couple coming from “MELUKOTE”, at the same time they saw a couple by name Bhattacharya and they happily accepted the invitation. Bhattacharya is from Bharadwaja Ghothra sect and their lineages are still doing the seva of the Lord even today.
